Tru (Townsend) is a teenage fag hag loyal to the cause. The offspring of lesbian moms, she’s got a gay-straight alliance to run; she’s also promised to keep mum about the sexuality of her friend Lodell (Thompson). As coming-out movies go, Tru Loved is no downer. Nobody dies, or prays the gay away. Despite the punning title, the gags carry the dialogue with surprising élan. If Juno has become the yardstick of teenspeak, then these kids are doing okay: Why say “beard” when you can say “Katie Holmes” instead? There are some unfortunate lapses into ye olde world of West Side Story, but hey—it’s not flaming without a nod to musical theater.
