The title of this amateurish found-footage sci-fi horror flick gets it about one-third right. We see an awful lot of Rendlesham, the unassuming stretch of Suffolk woodland that was the site of multiple reported alien sightings back in 1980. But there’s a distinct shortage of either UFOs or incident.
The setup is pure ‘Blair Witch’: for reasons left mostly vague, Jake (Danny Shayler) has decided to film old flame Sally (Abbie Salt) and her new boyfriend Gus (Robert Curtis) as they do a spot of night-time metal detecting in the titular forest. But when this bickering trio stray not-so-accidentally onto MoD land, some freaky low-budget shit starts to go down.
‘The Rendlesham UFO Incident’ isn’t a total write-off: director Daniel Simpson manages the odd moment of stark beauty when the camera isn’t juddering about like an epileptic on a trampoline, and when the promised spacecraft do turn up they’re surprisingly well rendered. But overall this is dull, derivative, murky stuff, full of running and shouting but never really going anywhere.
