A wry slice of domestic horror, in which Ohio newlyweds Eileen and Steve Bateman move into a seedy New York apartment and dream of making it in the big city. But the apartment's ancient refrigerator exerts a strange influence over their lives. Steve is consumed by a desire to consume, while Eileen is haunted by memories of her mother's domestic enslavement. The malevolent appliance also frustrates her efforts to start an independent career as an actress. The cheapo special effects (a man-eating fridge, flying fans, and a foot-eating pedal-bin) are perfectly suited to an offbeat, Kafkaesque horror comedy which, while sympathetic to Eileen's female plight, satirises her husband's yuppie aspirations.
