You'll chuckle the first time you see fresh-faced Vaughn in his off-the-shoulder loincloth, but Corman's no-budget prehistoric epic is endearing in the way it refuses to cheapen an admittedly fairly tacky sub-genre. In fact, as the youthful protagonist ignores the warnings of his tribe and crosses the river to face the much-feared monster that lives on the other side, the picture gathers imaginative momentum and conjures up at least one satisfying plot reversal. No wonder the star called it 'one of the best-worst films of all time'.
