Proof that even geniuses have their off days, this is a colossal disappointment after El Valley Centro and Los, the first two parts of Benning's 'California Trilogy' - both among the greatest turn of the century American films. Sogobi is structurally identical, comprising 35 static 150-second shots that examine the disparate geography of California. But, unlike the earlier films, this is much less concerned with man's interaction with the environment - most of the images this time show nature in the raw. With only intermittent flashes of the anger, intelligence and wit that characterised the other two movies, tedium sets in early. For completists only.
