Writer-director Gina Kim channels Douglas Sirk by way of Korean tearjerkers of the 1960s in this overheated melodrama. Wealthy New York–area housewife Sophie (Farmiga) devises a desperate plan to give her all-but-infertile Korean-American husband (McInnis) the child he wants: She pays a handsome illegal immigrant (Ha) to impregnate her. The sex is all business until it isn’t, trapping Sophie between two lovers. The steamy complications are wrapped around ideas about race, class and the rules of attraction, but Farmiga’s fearless performance is the main event.
