Deeply unconvincing from the start, this loose assemblage of clichés about émigré Chinese has only its London setting to distinguish it from a dozen predecessors set in New York. The three central characters (impossibly naive girl, sad ex-radical and muscle-queen wide-boy) plod through a highly predictable teaming-up and falling-out; there's no psychological depth, sociological insight or even credible emotion. Maybe the excellent Swan Song was the only real film that Zhang Zeming had in him.
