Shoreditch’s very own supermodel Agyness Deyn reinvents herself as an actress in this above-bog-standard gritty Brit drama. Before you roll your eyes, she really is stunning, outclassing pretty much everyone on screen with a sparky, heart-on-sleeve performance.
That said, she can’t have been too happy about the fiver-from-Primark glitter crop-tops she wears as Lily, an epileptic woman who leaves her job at an amusement arcade in a Northern seaside town to search for her big brother Mikey in London. The two were close as kids growing up in a tough family, but lost touch after being separated and put into care. Sunny, optimistic Lily steps off the train at King’s Cross like Dick Whittington, only to get ripped off and beaten up while hunting for Mikey.
Based on a novel by Ray Robinson, ‘Electricity’ isn’t perfect. It has some plausibility issues, not least a couple of guardian-angel characters including a Londoner who picks Lily off the streets and moves her into her flat that’s straight out of Elle Decoration. What’s less believable: that she has a spare room? Or that she’d let a complete stranger live in it rent-free?
