Miller in Chabrol territory with an intriguing thriller, based on Marc Behm's novel The Eye of the Beholder, in which Serrault's somewhat eccentric private eye is given a case following a young runaway couple. When the woman (Adjani) murders the man, Serrault simply follows her through a series of further killings, suspecting (or wishing) she might be his long-lost daughter. A colourful if not altogether successful study in obsession and guilt transference, it features excellent performances all round (Serrault is magnificent, as always) and a surprisingly appropriate score by Carla Bley.
