It's one of the most perfect team-ups in blockbuster history: Big Arnie, the Teutonic Titan with the wry edge; Paul Verhoeven, the satirical powerhouse with the fascism fascination; and Philip K Dick, the schizophrenic sci-fi genius. To be fair, there's not a whole lot of Dick's original story ('We Can Remember It For You Wholesale') left in Verhoeven's movie - this is much broader, gorier, goofier affair – but the theme of identity loss and untrustworthy memories remains intact. Arnold plays Doug Quaid, a blue-collar everyman (ha!) who dreams of a better life. Seeking to add spice, he signs up for Rekall, a service which implants false memories directly into the subconscious mind. 'Total Recall' is slick, sly and subversive, and if some of the special effects have aged somewhat, that only adds to the charm. Get your ass to Mars!
