The Man from Mo'Wax

3 out of 5 stars
This watchable profile of skittishly creative musical dynamo James Lavelle offers a nostalgia-fest for clubbers of a certain vintage.

Time Out says

This doc charting the career of dance music pioneer James Lavelle is a warts-and-all tales of hubris and heavyweight beats. We see the '90s impresario - a kind of trip-hop Malcolm McLaren - slide from vinyl junkie to all-but-actual junkie as a life of chemical highs and music biz lows takes its toll. Early Lavelle is insufferable; late Lavelle chastened.

There are memorable cameos from collaborators (Josh Homme take a bow) and a triumphant coda, but most of all, the rather melancholy sense of a visionary struggling to stay relevant.
