Mon Roi

This French drama about a woman (Emmanuelle Bercot) caught in a destructive relationship with a deeply charismatic but narcissistic man (Vincent Cassel, playing the ‘my king’ of the title) wears its heart a little too much on its sleeve. But it also manages to pack a punch, and the lead performances from Bercot and Cassel are strong. The director and co-writer is Maïwenn, who’s unafraid of grand gestures and big emotional moments: her observations about why people stay in difficult, damaging relationships feel essentially true
