Secessionist warfare breaks out in Brooklyn, but the makers of ‘Bushwick’ didn’t get any further than that initial brainstorm. Their movie is a tedious slog filled with pinging bullets, show-offy long takes from the ‘Children of Men’ playbook, and zero laughs. Mainly we follow a squealing grad student (Brittany Snow) and a Rambo-like janitor (Dave Bautista) who bond with each other over survival during a mysterious militia invasion. Don’t expect either character to hold your interest though; Bushwick just wants to be another ‘Cloverfield’ and doesn’t have the chops to pull that off. A satirist might have spun this into something pointed and fun. Nope. It’s all downbeat and sombre, with an ending that feels especially pretentious.
