Egg waffles, eggettes, gai daan zai or whatever you prefer to call them are a street food staple in Hong Kong. And while you can't go wrong with the classic style, local food stalls have continuously rolled out new and unconventional combos to keep things fresh and original. Whether you prefer to try funky flavours of cheese and charcoal or are looking for the popular star-patterned variety, here's where to get your hands on the best egg waffles in Hong Kong.

Mammy Pancake has more than 10 branches across the city. Variety is the name of the game here with plenty of different sweet or savoury flavours to pick from and special seasonal items. Their latest highlights include red velvet flavour as well as a winter special of sweet potato and purple yam among others. Their Central Market location even has the option of adding ice cream which really levels up this snack. We've also seen them collaborating with The Ale Project and Alvy's to come up with a unique chicken and egg waffle dish.

The shops in Tai On Building don’t necessarily have the most creative of names, but they certainly have accurate ones. Hung Kee’s egg waffles are indeed top quality, albeit slightly different in texture than your run-of-the-mill version of the local delicacy. Hot off the egg waffle maker, this golden-brown gem of snack is, as expected, crispy on the outside. But there isn’t that typical gap between the filling and crust. As a result, Hung Kee’s version is especially bouncy and tasty, even hours after its prime. The soft, cakey filling is a welcome departure from other versions we’ve tried, making the snack feel especially light and airy.

A family run business, McQ offers a variety of street food like cheung fun, siu mai and fishballs on top of their signature gai daan zai. The eggettes here are creative, like the crowd favourite matcha red bean, molten cheese, charcoal chocolate and more. The molten cheese option has cheese cubes placed in each and every eggette bubble which is released once you bite into the crunchy shell, striking the perfect balance between salty and sweet.

Modos serves up a variety of eggettes including some unconventional flavours such as Jacob’s Chocolate Orange, pandan, spicy meat floss and even Russian Borscht. The eggettes are freshly made, resulting in that perfect crunchy-on-the-outside and -soft-on-the-inside effect. Try the pandan gai daan zai for something nice and light or indulge a little and get the chocolate orange with chocolate chunks that are delightfully gooey.

Despite its name, Master Low-key’s food shop isn’t popular for being, wait for it, low-key. This traditional snack shop is loved for its Hong Kong specialities including eggettes and waffles, both of which is offered in their signature HK Golden flavour, which puts a spin on the traditional snack and flavours it with a lavish explosion of salted egg yolk, condensed milk, and brown sugar.

Best known for its star-patterned eggettes, More Eggettes offers much more than just a gimmicky snack. Beyond its signature starry eggette, the variety is very impressive. There’s honey fondant, curry meat floss, spicy pizza and many more. The purple sweet potato, with stars on each bubble, makes a great IG photo but more importantly, it tastes great too. The crunchy shell with smooth and aromatic purple filling is not overly sweet and hits the spot every time.
