Sometimes we want nothing more than to lie on the sofa alone with our Netflix subscription.
Step up to the standing stones and sing me a song of a lass that’s gone. ‘Outlander’, the time-travelling romp that has unlikely sci-fi fans fanning their flushed faces, is back on Amazon Prime for a third season later this year. There will be more historical melodrama, more epic romance and more bared flesh. But this season will be different because when we pick up with them Claire and Jamie are continents and centuries apart. Here’s everything else we know about ‘Outlander’ season 3.
What happened at the end of season 2?
While much of the second run was spent with Jamie and Claire scheming in the royal courts of Paris, the drama concluded at the Battle of Culloden. They sailed back to Jamie’s homeland with Bonnie Prince Charlie, and, as Claire predicted, the doomed battle in the Scottish highlands proved disastrous for both the Jacobites and the Frasers’ love story. In 1746, Claire went back through the stones and reunited with Frank three years after she went missing. At the very end of season two, Claire and her grown-up daughter returned to Scotland after Frank’s death and Brianna found out about her unusual parentage.
And what’s happening now?
We left Claire with Brianna and Roger Wakefield (Reverend Wakefield’s adopted son) at the ancient stone circle Craigh na Dun. Roger’s just told her that Jamie unexpectedly survived the Battle of Culloden and she’s decided she needs to go back in time. But don’t expect Claire and Jamie’s reunion to be that easy. From the look of the trailer we’ve seen, there’ll be more jumping around in space and time. We’ll be going back a bit to fill in what happens just after Claire and Jamie are separated. We’ll see a pregnant Claire in Boston and we’ll see Jamie return to Lallybroch. Got it?
Sorry, no. Where are Claire and Jamie?
It’s okay. It’s complicated. When we last saw Claire, it was 1968. She was in Scotland, Frank was dead and Brianna was in her 20s. But the trailer shows Claire being a doctor in America with a younger Brianna and Frank. Jamie is seen in Scotland in the aftermath of the battle.
So Frank’s back?
Yeah. Steady, faithful Frank has stuck around all these years playing happy families with Claire and Jamie’s child. He didn’t play much of a part in season two, but, if the trailer is anything to go by, you can expect more of him in these new episodes.
Are Claire and Jamie ever going to meet again?
Er, yeah. Obviously. The question is more when and what will have changed when they do. Decades have passed since they last saw each other; they might not really be the same people anymore.
When’s it back?
We’ll be catching up with the time-travelling beaus this September on Amazon Prime.
