We are now entering prime streaming season. With the weather cooling and nights arriving earlier, October is usually when we begin drawing the blinds and glueing ourselves in front of the TV set. Netflix, however, seems to be easing into autumn, with relatively few new releases that could be considered must-see, but plenty of stuff that’s worth a leisurely watch. That includes the return of a few popular series, documentaries centred on big-name celebs, Laura Dern finding love in the Mediterranean, and yet more Menéndez brothers content. And, of course, with this being spooky season, you can bet there’s some horror content as well. Here are the ten new titles on Netflix we’re most looking forward to.

What's New On Netflix October 2024

Heartstopper season 3

Alice Oseman’s tender and uplifting teen love story continues to observe the relationship between Nick and Charlie (Kit Connor and Joe Locke) as it grows from mutual infatuation into, possibly, something deeper. Adapted from Oseman’s own graphic novel, the series has won raves for its queer themes and sensitive handling of big issues including adolescent sex and mental health.

Premieres Oct 3

It's What's Inside

In this psychological horror comedy, a pre-wedding party devolves into chaos after a guest shows up with a device that allows users to switch consciousnesses. (Always that one friend with the damn Freaky Friday machine, right?) It marks a high-concept, high-energy and high-style debut from director Greg Jardin.

The Platform 2

The first Platform was a streaming hit during the pandemic – then, like a lot of things from that period, it was mostly forgotten. Consider this both a sequel and a reminder, then. The concept certainly hasn’t changed much: in a futuristic dystopian prison, inmates are subjected to a cruel food-distribution system that effectively turns them into a social experiment. Now, a new arrival sets out to end it.

The Menéndez Brothers

Didn’t get your fix of parent-murdering from last month’s Ryan Murphy-produced Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story? Now comes this documentary recounting the same ’90s tabloid fixation, featuring jailhouse interviews with the siblings themselves, who’ve long insisted their crime was motivated by years of physical and psychological abuse.

Starting 5

A slew of big names, including the Obamas, Peyton Manning and LeBron James’ business partner Maverick Carter, produced this docuseries following five NBA stars, including James and Jayson Tatum of the championship-bound Boston Celtics, through the 2023-24 season. Hard to imagine it’s all that revealing, but maybe we’ll get the story behind Jimmy Butler’s emo haircut.

Premieres Oct. 9

Lonely Planet

The year of the cougar continues. Following the leads of Anne Hathaway and Nicole Kidman, now it’s Laura Dern’s turn to get her groove back by banging a hot younger man. In this case, it’s Liam Hemsworth, who she meets on a writing retreat in Morocco. Hey, who doesn’t want Laura Dern to be happy?

Sweet Bobby: My Catfish Nightmare

As long as people keep getting catfished, documentaries will continue to be made about them. Adapted from the popular podcast, this docuseries recounts a London woman’s nearly decade-long online relationship with a man who – spoiler alert – turned out to be someone else. It might sound like a familiar tale, but the details are jaw-dropping.

Don't Move

Yet another riff on the old DOA formula, this Sam Raimi-produced horror-thriller involves a woman (Kelsey Asbille) who encounters a madman on an isolated hiking trail. Stuck with some kind of paralysing agent, she only has 20 minutes to attempt escape before her body shuts down completely. Are your palms sweaty yet?

Martha

From doyenne of domesticity to white-collar convict to Snoop Dogg’s bestie – few public figures have had quite the long, strange trip that Martha Stewart has. She’s the natural subject for a celebrity documentary. The question is, will it tell us anything we don’t already know?

The Diplomat season 2

Keri Russell returns to her Emmy-nominated role as Kate Wyler, newly appointed US ambassador to the United Kingdom, in this soapy thriller steeped in international intrigue. At the end of last season, Wyler comes to a horrifying conclusion: that an attack on a British warship was ordered by the UK prime minister himself. Add to that a car bomb targeting her ex-husband and tensions with Allison Janney’s American VP and, well, let’s just say there’s a lot on her plate right now.
