Written and performed by Apphia Campbell, this show follows the story of a jazz musician and civil rights activist called Mena Bordeaux at a poignant moment in her life. Undergoing a spiritual cleansing following the untimely death of her father, we see Bordeaux in a period of isolation without cigarettes, alcohol or access to the outside world. This becomes a time for her to reflect on the journey that took her from young piano prodigy who looked destined to serve the church, to a renowned jazz vocalist at the forefront of the Civil Rights Movement. The piece is based on the life of Nina Simone and sees Campbell perform in the style of her and other jazz greats including Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. Book tickets in advance here.
