Good old Germany. We have our Teutonic pals to thank for so many guilty pleasures: the hamburger, the hot dog (as well as the ketchup and mayonnaise that goes on top), gummi bears and, er, cocaine and amphetamines.
Anyway... Few would question that one of our other favourite treats, particularly once lubricated with beer, is a deliciously dirty doner kebab.
However, in much the same way that Germany has transformed the automotive industry, it has now turned its attention to making a healthier alternative to the classic Turkish post-pub 'elephant's leg'.
Having rapidly expanded across the United Arab Emirates (UAE) over the last couple of years, with dozens of restaurants in Dubai alone, German Doner Kebab has now opened the doors of it first UK venue, on Birmingham's Bull Street today.
While the doner kebabs we know and love generally come with enough calories to set off MyFitnessPal app warning alarms, meals from German Doner Kebab (GDK) promise to be comparatively nutritious. Or, if you ask GDK, 'like nothing you have ever tasted before'.
A glance at the menu show that GDK's 'unique fusion concept' dishes that use 100% veal and lamb, with 100% Halal chicken, accompanied by fresh vegetables and a special sesame seed bread. The menu also offers lahmacun (Turkish-style pizzas), borek rolled pastries and a booze-soaking doner box of meat and fries.
Okay, so it's not going to help you drop a waist size, but it might be enough to minimise the remorse that you feel when you spot the scattered lettuce, polystyrene box and plastic fork scattered across your living room the next day.
