This photography exhibition is the result of a project undertaken by Sophie Rickett and Bettina von Zwehl and commissioned by the Grain Photography Project. The pair's research focusses on the Library's archives, and in particular, one created by Victorian photographer and parliamentarian Sir Benjamin Stone. 'Album 31' was a culmination of photographs he wanted to keep but couldn't find a place for in other archives. This exhibition explores how Stone's approach to his other albums is disrupted significantly by this collection of images which link together in uncommon ways. Using his album as a starting point, the two artists explore their own outboxes, retrieving used material from their own artistic practice that 'did not fit', playing with meaning by re-contextualising and re-posititioning subject matter.
