Bangkokians (and those visiting the city) love to café-hop, a pastime that’s only encouraged by the sheer number of coffee joints in the city. In 2020, Bangkok saw the emergence of even more chillaxing spots that serve good drinks and yummy bites, plus awesome vibes. Here are our picks of the ten best cafés that opened this year.

  • Cafés
  • Phaya Thai

This new talk-of-the-town coffee shop grew out of the founder’s wish for people to make the best of their laziness (hence the name). The airy, minimalist space serves a wide variety of specialty brews, but we urge you to try the drip coffee (from B170), which uses beans from various sources like Brazil, Panama and Kenya. Have your caffeinated sips with sweet bites such as the Laze Cheesecake (B180) or one of their scrumptious scones (B90).

  • Cafés
  • Watthana

Don’t mistake this espresso bar at Carlton Hotel Bangkok Sukhumvit for just another bland hotel café. Set in the lobby of the hotel, Tuxedo serves quality coffee and palate-exciting desserts.

The menu will surely please heavy coffee drinkers. You have 48 Hours Cold Drip (B150), a black coffee served with a refreshing orange slice, and the Tuxedo series, a set of milk-coffee drinks that mix in varying ingredients. These cups are best paired with Marble Brick (B150 per piece), a marble cake that both looks and tastes amazing.

If you’re tired of cafés sporting either stark white minimalist walls or cute pastel-colored adornment, then head over to Labyrinth. The entire venue is designed to resemble an industrial loft or a bunker, featuring raw concrete walls, wooden stools, fluorescent lights and a pebbled floor.

While Labyrinthe’s architecture and interiors remain stark, its menu is anything but. All creativity went into coming up with a list of interesting drinks, including Black Magic (B90), a surprisingly delicious Thai coffee espresso mixed with lychee. Other special handpicked blends from several sources help widen your caffeine horizons.

  • Cafés
  • Yaowarat

This coffee house, which calls Arahus in Denmark home, is definitely one to check, if only to find out what the Nordic coffee culture is all about. The whole experience revolves around the “one roasting profile” technique, used to create rich and aromatic brews like Comfort latte (B110), and the stronger Adventurous (B150).

  • Charoennakhon

At the moment, the hype is centered around this Kyoto-born coffee shop. The awfully long line at the ICONSIAM branch may turn you off but, trust us, it’s completely worth the wait. The nutty signature blend is complete caffeine splendor, and we can’t say enough about the other brewed offerings.

Because of such high demand, the brand has opened a new kiosk at Siam Paragon.

  • Bang Na
  • price 2 of 4

Drop by Dough is paradise for those who love to pair a good cuppa with a sweet, soft doughnut. This Bang Na café gained popularity, not only for its coffee drinks, but also for a wide range of doughnuts that come in many flavors.

The cafe’s serenely chic Scandinavian-style interiors also appeals to those who want to sit quietly and comfortably with a cup, and then some, away from the crowd.

When it comes to the best croissant in the city, James Boulangerie surely holds a spot near to the top. This French-style bakery and café shot to pastry stardom because of its sought-after croissants, which lure the devoted to queue up as early as eight in the morning.

Sweet tooths are also tempted by the café’s other offerings, including its vanilla scones. The café is located pretty far from central Bangkok on Ratchaphruek Road, but the drive is definitely worth it.

Not too far from James Boulangerie is another crowd-pleaser. The newest branch of Nana Coffee Roasters is the largest café on Ratchaphruek Road. It’s a two-story venue with steampunk leanings, as seen in the steel beams and metal decor on site.

The brand has been fulfilling coffee cravers for quite some time now, and has other outlets in Ari and on Praditmanoonthum Road. Try Signature Kanda (B250), an espresso mixed with fruit tea, to refresh your mind and body during the day.

Glück is the new German-style café hidden behind Panjit Building in Thonglor, but its subtle location makes it very special for those who discover this highly comfy and healthy café.

The owner is devoted to giving guests with all hearty drinks and bites, including some traditional German food. Gluten-free brownies (B100) and apple crumble (B100) are the strong splendors of Glück, while the apfelschorle (German beverage that blends apple cider with soda, B80) is what you also need to try.

  • Cafés
  • Chatuchak

If you’re in no hurry, why not sit down and have a nice cup of coffee at this slow bar. Japanese and Scandinavian minimalism is the major selling point of the café, which allows you to leave your worries away and enjoy coffee made using back-to-basic ways.

Claim your spot at the bar and watch the baristas make coffee using a range of amazing techniques, from drip, to syphon, to aero press.
