16 best Bangkok bars for introverts

A catalog of drinking spots that allow privacy-loving peeps to enjoy a drink while avoiding human interaction

Let me get this straight: introverts also need a good time! As an introvert myself who occasionally enjoys a night-out in a cool drinkery with a nice tipple and one or two friends max for company, I can empathize with other fellow introverts who are probably put off by crowds in restaurants and bars, bright lights and too loud music. For us, finding joy in sundowner socials can be quite tricky.

So here I am, culling together spots around Bangkok where the vibe is ideal for those who prefer to sip their beer in silence. The criteria are simple: dim lighting, soft or no music, a private corner to hide from the crowd and, most importantly, good drinks.

Humble disclaimer: This is a list rounded up by one introvert (well, me), so please don’t hold a grudge if there's a place that you don’t agree with or isn’t included here. Suggestions are always welcome!

  • Tea rooms
  • Thonglor

Having that sense of familiarity and security may be one of the reasons introverts prefer to stay home. You can get that homey vibe from this Thonglor venue, which is the tearoom TE Time and Space during the day, and turns into a cocktail bar come nighttime.

  • Hotel bars
  • Charoenkrung

This iconic establishment is on the list for introverts who are also fans of live music. Order a cocktail, cozy up in one of the plush chairs and lose yourself in the music without a care for the rest of the world.

  • Ekamai

This Ekkamai drinkery’s pitch-dark interiors provide the perfect camouflage and give off a slightly sinister vibe, as if you’re walking into a Japanese yakuza hideout. So it’s ideal for those who want to nurse their drinks in secret.

Despite the word ‘social’ in its name, this bar in Four Seasons Bangkok is an almost-perfect spot to cocoon with great drinks and soft music (you can barely hear it, tbh). Cozy booths provide private breathing space. The catch: Can you snatch this preferred seating from the extroverts?

  • Langsuan
  • price 4 of 4

Red velvet curtains, polished dark wood partitions and low-lit strobe lights give this elegant place a theatrical milieu. Though it’s great for dates, it’s also ideal for parties of one. Take your social aversion up a notch while listening to jazz music and sipping a luxurious cocktail throughout the night.

  • Langsuan

Located at Sindhorn Kempinski, this bar is perfect for introverts who like to drink amid unassumingly posh surroundings. Leave the outside world behind, take up space in one of the comfy armchairs, and just focus on yourself and the quality booze.

  • Cocktail bars
  • Ratchadamri
  • price 4 of 4

Introverts will appreciate the seatings that face floor-to-ceiling windows at this Waldorf Astoria outlet. The windows look out to magnificent vistas of Bangkok’s skyline, so just imagine you and a drink in hand, pensively taking in this sight while ignoring the rest of the world.

Of the two floors that make up this whimsical speakeasy, I recommend the second (don’t get confused: the actual first floor is a flower shop, while the bar is situated on the second and third floors of the building). Sink into one of the counter seatings, turn your back to passersby and choose from over 100 types of gin that you can savor in peace.

  • Thonglor

Nothing says privacy like curtained booths, which you can definitely find at this Thonglor joint. Bring a party of like-minded introverts (or just come by yourself) to let loose with some cool refreshments and all-day-dining fare. It also operates as a café during the day in case you’re not quite nocturnal.

The topmost annex of Park Hyatt hosts this stylish venue, which extends out to an open-air space that’s ideal for nursing a glass of wine and getting lost in your thoughts under Bangkok’s starless sky.

If you’re an introvert with a penchant for kink, then this 50 Shades of Gray-inspired watering hole may just appeal to you. There are enough private corners for chilling in peace and a cigar room if you fancy smoking a Cuban blunt without being disturbed. Don’t forget to check if the venue is hosting a blow-out party beforehand.

  • Cocktail bars
  • Bang Rak
  • price 2 of 4

Its dimly-lit ambience combines with sleek and glossy decor to nurture your private side. Just check beforehand that the bar isn’t hosting a party on the evening of your visit. Don’t say you weren’t warned.

  • Charoennakhon

The Millenium Hilton’s rooftop bar offers views that look over the Chao Phraya river, whether you’re sitting inside or al fresco on bleacher-like seating. Either way, just focus on the beauty that lies in front of you while enjoying a classic cocktail.

  • Thonglor

Take a seat at the lengthy counter bar and turn your back to anyone walking in and out at this Prohibition-themed venue. Jazz music playing over the speakers drown out the buzz while brown wooden aesthetics give the bar a subdued vibe.
