D.C. has earned the dubious title of the least desirable place to live in America, according to a recent survey by Clever Real Estate. Unfortunately this is the second year in a row we’ve clinched the title. How did we get here?

According to the survey, 65 percent of respondents point to the exorbitant living costs as a major point of frustration, from housing costs to everyday expenses like groceries, dining and entertainment. The city's notorious political atmosphere further aggravates its unpopularity, especially during the heated periods of election years. D.C. also ranks poorly in public safety metrics. Add to that public transportation issues and the city’s aging infrastructure and you’ve got a big stew of disappointment.

Despite its cultural richness and historical significance, D.C.'s practical living conditions overshadow its many amazing things to do, leading to its ranking as the least desirable city in this survey. This combination of high costs, safety issues and political tensions paints a bleak picture for prospective residents. But perhaps we can focus on the positive and note that this survey only reached out to 1,000 people. From the top-notch restaurants and bars to exciting neighborhoods, D.C. can be a great place to live.
