If you've never had the opportunity to see the White House grounds, you may get your chance this weekend. The White House just announced that its 2024 fall garden tours will happen this weekend on Saturday, October 12 and Sunday, October 13.

Generally, the White House opens the gardens to public tours twice a year—once in the spring, and once in the fall. The tours, which are free and Saturday and Sunday from 10am-4:30pm, give visitors a chance to walk around the White House Gardens and south grounds, which include the South Lawn, the Rose Garden near the West Wing and Jacqueline Kennedy Garden near the East Wing (the tour doesn't include any interiors).
Other spots visitors have seen on past tours include the White House beehive and the kitchen garden created by former first lady Michelle Obama. Also, you never know who might drop in—President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden made an appearance at one of the spring tours a couple years ago.

How to get tickets to the White House garden tours

Tickets are only available in person on a first-come, first-served basis. To score some, line up outside the White House Visitor Center (across the street from Pershing Park at 1450 Pennsylvania Ave.) starting at 8:30am on the day you'd like to visit. Tickets are timed, so you may have to come back later in the day for the tour. Each person needs their own ticket, regardless of their age.

Once you get your ticket, head to the South Lawn entrance on 15th Street, NW between E. Street and Constitution Ave., NW. Enter at 15th Street, NW and Alexander Hamilton Place, NW if you need ADA accommodation. Make sure to leave some time to go through the security checkpoint; backpacks, bags and purses besides medical bags and clutches that are less than 5 inches by 7 inches aren't allowed. Leave water bottles, selfie sticks and e-cigarettes at home, too.
