Did you know that the US of A is celebrating the big 2-5-0 in 2026? George Washington’s Mount Vernon is making preparations for the major milestone by renovating its education center. While this means the building that houses its museum exhibits, theaters and other galleries is closed, the historic estate is offering some immersive events over the next few months to give you a taste of what life was like back when our nation was founded.

Kick off the festivities on July 20 and 21 with a dive into 18th-century tavern life. Sip on historical brews, play colonial games and watch a master cooper (barrel-maker) in action. Plus, find out what George Washington really thought about local taverns—that’s right, he posted reviews. A free shuttle to the reconstructed distillery caps off the experience.

On July 27 and 28, groove to the music of the 1700s. Listen to songs of the African diaspora and revolutionary anthems from Mount Vernon’s resident fifer. Feeling fancy? Learn to dance the “Indian Queen” country dance or the lively “Gobby-O” jig.

Embark on a culinary tour of the estate on August 10 and 11. Discover the eats that fueled both freed and enslaved folks, from garden to kitchen. Sample treats like strawberry ice cream and hoecakes, and hear the untold stories of the enslaved cooks.

August 24 and 25 are all about 18th-century book arts. Enjoy a dramatic reading from Washington's own journal and delve into the intricate process of bookmaking.

Finally, on August 31 and September 1, meet the furry and feathered friends of Mount Vernon. Learn about the estate's historic animals and bring your own pup for a special dog walking tour. Discover quirky tales of Washington’s oddly named dogs and the estate's current animal residents.

Mount Vernon’s themed weekends are packed with history, fun, and a dash of George Washington’s personality. Check it out to brush up on your colonial history—the countdown to 2026 starts now. Find more information about all of these upcoming events at www.mountvernon.org.
