As the country gears up to celebrate Independence Day with picnics and fireworks, our nation’s capital is prepping for its annual 4th of July bash. Events on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. include a parade, family-friendly activities, a concert and—of course—an electrifying fireworks display. If you’re heading out to the celebration, be sure to arrive early, take public transportation if possible and be prepared for summer heat. Otherwise, here’s everything you need to know about Independence Day on the National Mall, including the schedule of events and how to watch from home.

The National Independence Day parade

America’s National Independence Day Parade takes place from 11:45am to 2pm on Constitution Avenue from 7th to 17th Street. Enjoy marching bands, fife and drum corps, floats, military units, giant balloons, equestrian teams, drill teams and VIP participants. Find more information about the parade at july4thparade.com.

Family activities on the Washington Monument grounds

Kids age 10 and up are invited to become junior spies. Check into the Sylvan Theater Family Area and use the password Operation Independence to embark on a scavenger hunt and learn about spying techniques during the American Revolution. Complete all the activities to earn a special Fourth of July Junior Ranger badge.

A Capitol Fourth concert

The concert takes place from 8-9:30pm on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. The star-studded salute is hosted by Alfonso Ribeiro and includes performances by Smokey Robinson, Fantasia, Darren Criss, Sheila E., the National Symphony Orchestra and many more. Can’t make it in person? Watch the concert live on your local PBS station.

Fireworks on the National Mall

The celebration culminates in a stunning fireworks display over the National Mall. Launched from the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool area, they can be seen throughout many areas of D.C. and even Northern Virginia. Catch the display live online from home via the Trust for the National Mall’s Monument Cam.
