Best U.S. ski resorts for non-skiers

Park City is best known as the nation’s largest ski area; however, this iconic destination offers much more than just slopes. While there are a handful of incredible hotels to choose from, the Waldorf Astoria Park City—conveniently situated on the base of Park City Mountain Resort—is especially noteworthy for its luxe accommodations, all of which feature gas fireplaces, private balconies, and kitchenettes or full kitchens.

Additional hotel highlights include an all-season outdoor pool, an expansive spa and fitness center, and ample drinking and dining opportunities ranging from a pop-up hot cocoa bar to s’mores, to fireside sushi. A stay here also puts you within close proximity to charming Main Street (which is lined with shops, restaurants, bars, galleries, and more). Beyond skiing, other outdoor winter activities include dog sledding, fat tire biking, snowmobiling, ice skating, and more.

This sprawling Colorado ski resort boasts a bustling arts and culture scene that will delight travelers of all ages. Downton Aspen is home to the 30,000-square-foot Aspen Art Museum, which has 12,500 square feet of exhibition place and a buzzy rooftop cafe. Every Saturday from 5-9 PM, the contemporary museum hosts an amazing apres ski dance party. The Resnick Center for Herbert Bayer Studies, which—you guessed it—pays homage to the artist’s work and legacy, features complimentary admission from 12-5 PM on Tuesdays-Saturdays.

History buffs should visit the Aspen Historical Society to learn more about the region’s storied past. We’d also be remiss not to mention Belly Up Aspen, a unique 450-person music club that offer live performances. Meanwhile, jazz lovers can head straight to Jazz Aspen Snowmass’ Cafe Winter Series, which offers intimate candlelit performances at The Little Nell on select dates through late March.

Families will especially appreciate a trip to Jay Peak Resort in Vermont. Here, guests can choose from a slew of off-the-slope activities that’ll please even the pickiest of little ones. Best of all, you need not step outside to experience some of the resort’s best amenities, including an indoor waterpark, a climbing gym, an arcade, and a skating arena. Parents can drop their kids off at one of two childcare facilities before hitting the spa for some well-deserved R&R. The property also offers a handful of events for guests to attend, including live music, guided snowshoeing, and trivia, to name a few. Once it’s time to refuel, check out one of the 12-plus drinking and dining options, which range from quaint coffee shops to eclectic food trucks and (so) much more.

Deer Valley is known for its ritzy ambiance and luxury resorts, including the gorgeous Goldener Hirsch resort. This posh property—part of the Auberge Resorts Collection—resembles a chic European-style chalet. Select accommodations are equipped with wood-burning fireplaces and private balconies; however, we recommend splurging on one of the impeccably designed suites, which are decorated with one-of-a-kind paintings, antiques, and furniture imported from Austria.

Guests can expect everything from award-winning eats and culinary experiences (think: Bavarian pretzel making, snow picnics, and European-inspired cuisine that’ll make your mouth water) to a seasonal rooftop wellness center where guests can partake in cold plunges. Complimentary activities run the gamut from Alpine Swiss s’mores at the rooftop pool to snowy hikes, to live music.

Wellness seekers everywhere can—and should!—splurge on a stay at Amangani in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. This swanky, celeb-loved resort is best known for its incredible wellness offerings like facials and massages. The property also offers signature winter rituals like the Apres Ski Dream (featuring a traditional sage ritual, a peppermint foot scrub, and more) and the Winter Solstice (includes a Himalayan salt body scrub and hot stone massage and body wrap plus crystal sound bowl therapy). Alternatively, sign up for an acupuncture session, healing crystal sound bath, or private yoga session. Spa amenities include a heated pool and hot tub (complete with panoramic mountain views, no less), eucalyptus steam rooms, and a serene relaxation lounge.

We don’t know who needs to hear this, but you don’t actually have to hit the slopes to partake in all the apres ski fun, especially in Vail. This year, the resort celebrates its 60th anniversary, which means you can expect even more festivities than before. Take your celebrations to the net level and retreat in a vintage ice bar and/or snow bungalow with music, food, and cocktails in Eagle’s Nest and Wildwood. Other apres hotspots include Cucina at The Lodge at Vail, Revel Lounge, Los Amigos, Garfinkel’s, and El Segundo. Also, as part of the resort’s 60th-anniversary festivities, travelers can snag a free Vail Après Passport—but only for a limited time.

7. Best for Bachelorettes: Pendry Park City, UT

Finding the perfect bachelorette party destination is no easy feat, especially if everyone in the group has different interests. Alas, those looking for a luxe cold-weather escape near the slopes need not look further than Pendry Park City. This modern alpine lodge offers ski-in/ski-out access for those who prefer to hit the slopes; meanwhile, non-skiers can take advantage of the ample on-site amenities, including the wellness-centric spa, the or the rooftop pool, where postcard-worthy mountain views are best enjoyed with local brews and creative cocktails. Regroup for apres-ski at the on-site, aptly named Après Pendry lounge (which offers indoor and outdoor seating, live music, a bustling bar and roaring fireplaces) or KITA, the sceney Japanese-inspired eatery. Catch up on some zzzs in a contemporary albeit cozy guest room or suite. Pro tip: Book the Stay & Play Package for up to $500 in daily resort credits.

8. Best Adults-Only: Twin Farms, VT

Set across 300 sprawling acres in rural Vermont, Twin Farms feels like your very own private oasis. That’s because there are just 28 accommodations (comprised of rooms, suites, treehouses and cottages), many with uber-luxe touches like private porches, deep soaking tubs, fireplaces and four-poster beds.

Moreover, this all-inclusive, adults-only Relais & Chateau property is ideal for those looking to retreat to nature and explore the outdoors at their own pace. While there are private groom trails for skiing, non-skiers may opt to partake in other winter activities—fat-tire biking, ice fishing, ice skating and sledding—followed by a restorative massage at the spa.

Finally, the property is known for its top-notch farm-to-table fare at the two on-site restaurants. However, for a true treat, the team can even set up a gourmet picnic for the entire group by the pond, atop the ski hill, or, well, pretty much anywhere else you can dream of.

9. Best for arts and culture: Taos Ski Valley, NM

This village-slash-ski resort is a haven for arts and culture lovers. What’s more, beyond the skiing—and snowmobiling and ice skating opps—the destination and its surrounding area is renowned for its abundance of art galleries, museums and adobe architecture: that is, in addition to its centuries-old history. Taos Ski Valley is an easy half-hour drive from the buzzy centuries-old Taos Plaza, the beating heart of the destination. Taos Pueblo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that just so happens to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in America, is also a half-hour away. While some travelers may opt to stay in the heart of the ski resort—which boasts its own accommodations, spa, and a handful of drinking, eating, and shopping venues—others may choose to make their base closer to downtown Taos at the centrally located and Southwestern-inspired El Monte Sagrado.
