Now that the holidays are over, it's time to bead it at Mardi Gras. The carnival celebration synonymous with purple, gold and green beads is here. The weeks-long celebration begins on Twelfth Night, the 12th day of Christmas, and continues through Fat Tuesday, the day before the start of Lent, a period of 40 days of sacrifice and reflection observed by many Christians.

Mardi Gras (French for Fat Tuesday) has been celebrated since ancient times, first in Greece and then in Rome. The pre-Lenten Christian festivities later made their way to Paris in the Middle Ages, and then French explorer Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville brought the winter festival to the southern U.S. in 1699.

The revelry includes parades and parties hosted by krewes, who toss "throws" like beads and festooned coconuts from decorated floats. Get ready to show your beads and laissez les bon temps rouler (Let the good times roll)!

The largest and most famous Mardi Gras celebration in the USA is in New Orleans, where Fat Tuesday is a legal holiday. NOLA has been celebrating Mardi Gras since the early 18th century and the krewe Twelfth Night Revelers were the first to toss "throws'' in 1870. Beginning on Twelfth Night and ending on Fat Tuesday, dozens of parades are held, including the Chewbacchus sci-fi foot parade in the historic Marigny neighborhood, the Legion of Mars, a salute to military, veterans, and first responders along St. Charles Avenue, Barkus, a costumed canine parade in the French Quarter, the Knights of Babylon with classic flambeaux lighting (gaslight torches) and antique float designs, and the Krewe of Hermes, the oldest nighttime parade. Don't miss two of the most famous krewes: Zulu, famed for its costumes and hand-decorated coconut throws, and Rex, the 153-year-old krewe that parades on Fat Tuesday down St. Charles Avenue. Mardi Gras New Orleans runs through March 4, 2025.
