Amtrak is now running its limited-time sale, where you can bring a plus-one into your roomette for free. It is called the Roomette Free Companion Sale. Now through February 6, you can book a first-class roomette space on the train and bring a friend for free. That space is a tiny, cozy area with a closing door that during the day consists of two seats that face each other with a table between them. At night, an Amtrak staff member will come in to help you convert the seats into one bunk and pull down the second bunk from the wall. You’ll essentially be in bunk beds for the evening, feeling the lulling motion of the train (some of the best naps ever have been on trains, multiple sources relate), although we must say that if your route includes a middle of the night stop, that might wake you up. Here’s some more information below.

What is the best part of the roomette experience?

Booking a first-class roomette means that you'll have a private space and be covered for three meals a day. You can dine in the dining car or have the meal delivered to your roomette.

Are there any other perks?

Yes, you’ll have lounge access at major stations, which is great for getting some free bites before boarding and a pleasant place to wait if the train is delayed. Your Amtrak staff member can help you with your luggage, meals, and turndown service. You also receive priority boarding and that big-picture window all to yourselves.

Can you name some sample fares that will get me to book today?

Yes, how about this: two people can go from New Orleans to Memphis, meals included, for $215 total. Orlando to Miami for $252. Chicago to Minneapolis for $228. Basically, that’s the price of six meals right there: plus you get the amazing train ride.

If I don’t bring a companion, will I be paired with a stranger?

Amtrak says, don’t worry, there’s no such risk: they don’t configure any pairings. When you reserve a roomette, you must provide the name of your companion at the time of booking. If you don’t bring a companion, the roomette space is yours alone.

What if I invite a companion later?

Unfortunately, that’s not permitted. You must provide the companion’s name at the time of booking. It’s best to invite your bestie now, so you can both have this experience—the private space with the complimentary meals—at no extra charge.

Can you tell us what it's like on Amtrak?

Sure. Here's a story about riding the Zephyr from Sacramento to Reno.
