Visitors to Margate, New Jersey are undoubtedly aware of a local attraction known as Lucy the Elephant—and how could they not be? At 60 feet tall (six stories), this designated National Historic Landmark is hard to miss. Originally built in 1881, Lucy weighs 90 tons and comes complete with impressive-looking tusks and an ornate howdah (that thing which carries riders on its back) offering commanding views of the ocean. Did we mention that she has a swanky bedroom and a living room/dining area inside of her? Yes, she does, and Airbnb is now offering three different guests a one-night stay there. Available dates are March 17, 18 and 19, and cost $138 per night—a dollar for each of Lucy's 138 years.

Originally named the Elephant Bazaar, Lucy was the creation of Philadelphia inventor and entrepreneur James Lafferty, who erected her to lure potential real estate investors and tourists from nearby Atlantic City. Lafferty spent $25,000–$38,000 on Lucy's construction, which utilized one million pieces of wood and 12,000 square feet of tin. She’s the oldest roadside attraction in the United States.

In 1887, Lafferty sold the Elephant Bazaar to another Philadelphian, Anton Gertzen, whose daughter-in-law Sophie reportedly came up with the Lucy moniker. It remained in Gertzen family hands for the next half-century, serving as a restaurant, business office, cottage and tavern.

By 1968, Lucy had become severely dilapidated and was slated for demolition, until she was rescued in 1970 by the Save Lucy Committee, which moved the elephant to a city-owned lot near its original site. A restoration project completed in 2000 brought Lucy back to life
