Anytime you visit a home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, you kind of wish you lived there. And Taliesin West in Scottsdale, AZ gives you that vibe tenfold, because it’s a place that he created to live himself.
But not to fear, a happy hour event lets you pretend for a few hours that you’re just hanging out on your lawn having a few drinks with your buddies—it’s “Sunset and Sips” and it takes place the second and fourth Thursday of each month. That’s today!
Taliesin means “shining brow,” and Wright deliberately sited the home to lie on the hillside’s “brow” rather than at its top, making its architecture seamlessly into the landscape. The house’s triangulated lawn makes it appear like the prow of a ship sailing to the horizon (or, Scottsdale) and the cacti on the way give a general sense of coral in the ocean. This metaphor works even better after your second gibson! (It's not required to have a vintage cocktail, but at this incredible midcentury modern home, how could you not?)

You can enjoy Wright's aesthetic and thoughtful landscape planning with other guests, mingling while the sun sets and you experience spectacular views of the city below you. Your happy hour ticket gives you one drink and the chance to peruse the outdoor pathways of this home and select indoor spaces. Access to these interiors rotates on a weekly basis, so if you keep drinking, you can eventually see the entire property—or just take the tour! Members get a second complimentary drink (and a discount on the overall ticket), and bartenders will keep drinks flowing, free or not. The event takes place 5 to 7 pm on the second and fourth Thursdays and costs $35.
Taliesin West is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and sits on 500 acres of the Sonora Desert. Wright wintered here from 1937 until his death in 1959.
