Time Out has just named the best cities in the world for 2025, and you, our loyal reader, have a lot to do with it. Each year, we quiz thousands of locals on what it's like to live in their hometowns. We ask them about their areas' dining scene, nightlife, arts and culture, and overall city vibe. This year, in particular, we wanted to know about the aspects of a city that help it feel like home. Do folks feel safe? Is living there affordable? How easily are people making friends and finding love? Livability was our key metric, but our ranking also includes insight from our city experts worldwide, who voted on this year's list of the world's best cities.

First on the list is Cape Town, South Africa. One of the world's most eclectic cities—where you can hang with penguins one minute and sip world-class wine the next—Cape Town is an affordable destination that offers something for everyone. It scored high for its food scene (consequently, the city is also home to a Time Out Market), and 82 percent of participants described it as beautiful.

New York City is the first of four United States destinations to make the cut. Ranked No. 3 in the world, NYC is for people who thrive on excitement. From public art displays to Michelin-starred restaurants and award-winning theater, there's no shortage of thrilling things to do and see. To that end, locals gave NYC's arts and culture scene a 92 percent approval rating.
