Solo travel is on the rise as travelers choose to head out on their own personal journeys without being tied to other people. This freewheeling approach can open up more opportunities for spur-of-the-moment adventure, but some travelers might not feel so safe going solo when it comes to staying alone at night.

Women who hit the road on their own might be especially concerned, especially when booking an Airbnb. There are plenty of destinations that are exceptionally welcoming and safe for solo female travelers, and a slew of amazing Airbnbs available to make a solo stay even better. But many solo travelers may feel uncomfortable revealing a solo stay to a stranger. That’s why Business Insider travel reporter Joey Hadden always books a stay for two.

The frequent traveler prefers to stay in Airbnbs, whether it’s a cozy cabin, a tiny home or a unique repurposed structure. Her top tip is to book a stay for two, even if it costs more. She’ll tell the owner that she plans on bringing a travel companion. That way she’ll “feel more comfortable falling asleep at night in a stranger's place.” Booking a stay for two often costs more than booking as a single guest, but she says the price is worth it. An extra $40 isn’t much when it comes to peace of mind, and occasionally a friend will join her for the stay anyway.

So if you’re looking to travel solo and want to prioritize unique stays at Airbnbs, book a stay for two and, like Haddon, you’ll feel safer and sleep better at night.
