Looking for a vacay on the cheap? According to a survey conducted by Cheaphotels.org, you won’t find it in Charleston, South Carolina. The historic city topped the charts for the most expensive spring destination for hotels in the country, averaging $358 per night for the cheapest double room. The survey included properties that were rated three or more stars and were situated near a beach or city/town center.

There is a silver lining though—hotel rates in the majority of destinations have dropped when compared to last year’s rates. Even in pricey Charleston, rates dropped by $16 for the cheapest room. In fact, the average hotel rates in the 20 most expensive spring destinations dropped 11 percent this year, suggesting a decline in the demand for hotel stays.

What other fine cities topped the list? These are the 10 most expensive destinations for accommodations this spring in the United States:

  1. Charleston, South Carolina
  2. Lahaina, Hawaii
  3. Kihei, Hawaii
  4. Wailea, Hawaii
  5. Anna Maria Island, Florida
  6. Napa, California
  7. Calistoga, California
  8. Boston, Massachusetts
  9. Sedona, Arizona
  10. Poipu, Hawaii

Perhaps the real lesson here is to simply visit these destinations in a different season.
