We'll start by saying that we're sure this is never going to happen but... A for effort?
A new petition on change.org is (unsurprisingly) garnering attention across the Internet: One Philip Kolas is urging streaming media services (think Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime and more) to offer their content free of charge for 60 days to "encourage people to stay home during a quarantine." As of now, 63,059 have signed the petition.
"During a worldwide viral pandemic, social distancing and personal quarantine is vitally important to stem the risk of spreading disease," reads the request. "While this is a heroic and necessary challenge, it also runs the risk of boredom and isolation, which can lead to depression, among other factors. Many people are turning to their streaming services to alleviate their monotony. The problem with this is that many people cannot afford these membership fees, especially in a time like now when many people's economic livelihood is already strained."
Kolas goes on requesting a "temporary 60-day stoppage of membership chargers" because "if people can watch as much as they want, whenever they want, this will help alleviate the stress of home isolation." He calls it a "responsible community health strategy."
Never say never but we're pretty sure that our beloved streaming services will never agree to such an arrangement, considering that over 50 million people signed up for Disney Plus within six months of its release and Netflix reported 16 million new members in the first three months of 2020—a number that contributed to a major surge in the company's stock price.
