American Airlines just released a new set of face covering guidelines that follow the most recent suggestions from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The new rules will officially go into effect on August 19.
All passengers over the age of 2 are still required to don face coverings from the moment they arrive at the airport, through their flight and until they leave their destination airport. Masks need to properly cover both nose and mouth and can only be removed while eating and/or drinking.
The new guidelines specifically scrutinize the types of masks allowed on the craft. Effective next week, face coverings made with materials like mesh and lace will no longer be accepted. Masks with one-way valves or vents will also be prohibited. "These can allow exhaled respiratory droplets to reach others and potentially spread COVID-19," reads an official press release announcing the new set of restrictions.
Also: face shields will only suffice if worn alongside accepted face coverings.
"Wearing a face covering is a responsibility we all share. An effective covering, worn properly, is one of the best ways we can control the spread of COVID-19 to protect our team members and customers," said Alison Taylor, Chief Customer Officer at American Airlines, in the official statement.
If you happen to forget your mask at home (what world are you living in?) or don one that doesn't meet the proper requirements, the staff at the airport will provide you with an acceptable one. Unwilling to comply? You'll likely be denied boarding.
