Pizza is important. Nobody can debate this. From being a food that some underaged people will selectively eat as their sole source of nutrition, to the craveable late-night party food for adults, to the slice that you grab in Manhattan and keep going...it’s all beautiful and we thank various deities daily for its existence.
As we tend to do here at Time Out, we’re sharing a ranking of the best pizzerias you can find in the U.S. The winner for the last two years, Una Pizza Napoletana in New York City, was just reconfirmed as the best for this year, too (congratulations! You are no one-off winner!). At the 50 Top Pizza USA 2024 Guide awards ceremony in NYC last night, the owner, Anthony Mangieri, was visibly moved. That just makes us want to stop by for a pie even more!
In second place, Tony’s Pizza Napoletana by Tony Gemignani in San Francisco won, and taking third place was Pizzeria Beddia by Joe Beddia in Philadelphia.
How were these pizzerias selected? Anonymous inspectors had the enviable job of visiting these spots and evaluating the customer experience and the deliciousness of the pizza itself.
Other wins? The best pizza slice is from L’industrie Pizzeria in New York. As a city, New York wins with the most restaurants mentioned in the guide (17!), followed by Chicago (7) and Portland (6). New York also wins as a state, with 19 mentions, followed by California (14) and Illinois (7)—we’re thinking Chicago might have a lot to do with Illinois’s luck here! Ken’s Artisan Pizza in Portland (No. 5 below) also won a special Green Oven 2024 – Goeldlin Award for its outstanding sustainability practices.
