Just in time for the Oscars, Time Out has released a list of the world’s most beautiful theaters. These are theaters that go beyond crisp, clear pictures and surround sound speakers. They are stunningly designed, and add drama to the proceedings. Many are historic, and worth exploring before the movie starts. Twelve theaters in the U.S. made the list, and California leads the pack with six.

The Village East Cinema in New York was named the number three most beautiful theater. This ornate theater was built in the ‘20s with Moorish Revival design. Other New York theaters that made the list are the Metrograph and the Paris Theater.

California is home to six stunning theaters—TCL Chinese Theatre, New Beverly Cinema, Orinda Theatre, Avalon Theater, Egyptian Theatre and Grand Lake Theatre. Also making the list in the U.S. are the Music Box Theatre in Chicago, Coolidge Corner Theatre in Massachusetts and Plaza Theatre in Atlanta.
