Romania has officially joined the U.S. Visa Waiver Program, making it easier for Romanian citizens and nationals to plan a trip to the States (assuming they're traveling through a friendly and hassle-free U.S. airport).

Starting around March 31, 2025, Romanians can visit the U.S. for up to 90 days without the hassle of getting a visa. Whether it’s for business or leisure, all that’s needed is an approved application through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA).

U.S. travelers already enjoy visa-free trips of up to 90 days to Romania, so this levels the playing field.

Romania is the 43rd country to join the Visa Waiver Program and the fourth added under President Joe Biden, after Croatia (2021), Israel (2023) and Qatar (2024).

What is the Visa Waiver Program?

The Visa Waiver Program (VWP) allows citizens and nationals of participating countries to visit the U.S. for tourism or business purposes for up to 90 days without the hassle of a visa application. Travelers still need to secure a valid Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) approval, however.

The program is mostly reserved for developed countries that rank high on the Human Development Index and boast strong, stable economies. Countries have to meet security benchmarks including counterterrorism efforts, immigration enforcement, document security and border management requirements. Eligibility is reviewed periodically.
