It’s almost that time of year again—when everything turns green, even things that shouldn't be. In advance of St. Patrick's Day, McDonald's is bringing back its iconic Shamrock Shake on February 10, marking the official start of Shamrock Shake Season. But this year, the beloved shake isn’t alone. This year marks the return of a McDonaldland character that hasn't been seen in decades: Uncle O’Grimacey, Grimace’s all-green, shamrock-loving uncle, straight from Sham Rock, Ireland.
The Shamrock Shake, a creamy vanilla soft-serve blended with minty green syrup and topped with whipped cream, has been a fan-favorite since 1970. And for those who like a little crunch with their nostalgia, the Oreo Shamrock McFlurry—featuring crushed Oreo pieces mixed into that same minty goodness—is making a comeback too.
But the real surprise is Uncle O’Grimacey. First introduced in 1975, this St. Patrick’s Day-loving character—sporting a shamrock vest and a jaunty hat—was once the unofficial mascot of Shamrock Shake Season before fading into McDonald’s character history alongside Mayor McCheese and Captain Crook. Now he’s back to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Shamrock Shake fundraiser, which helped build the first Ronald McDonald House.
To honor his return, McDonald’s is dropping limited-edition Uncle O’Grimacey merch, including t-shirts, hats and crewnecks. Even better? Proceeds from every Shamrock Shake and merch purchase will support Ronald McDonald House Charities.
So get ready to go green with a creamy, minty shake and tip your hat to the return of Uncle O'Grimacey.
