Heads up, shoppers: several big-name retailers are hitting pause later this month, closing for a full day or part of the day. No, this is not an indication of another round of retail closures—these chains are shutting down on Sunday, April 20 to give employees a break for the Easter holiday. Like many did for Thanksgiving and Christmas, retail stores are opting out of holiday hours for the spring celebration.

While this means no last-minute runs to Target or Sam's Club to stock up on Easter candy, you’re not completely out of luck. Walmart will stay open, along with Kroger, Trader Joe’s, Wegman’s and Harris Teeter, so you still have options if you forgot any goodies for an Easter basket.

Why are stores closing on Easter Sunday?

Stores are closing on Sunday, April 20 in celebration of the Christian holiday of Easter. The date of Easter Sunday changes every year as it follows the 40 day period known as Lent. Retail chains are honoring the holiday, allowing employees to enjoy or just take the day off.
