Did you know that August 23rd is National Cheap Flight Day? Well, now you know, and you can add this bit of smarts to your travel hack repertoire: National Cheap Flight Day is a day that celebrates the time of year when fares dip to their lowest point, and CheapOair has the data to back it up.

As summer fades and everyone starts thinking about back-to-school routines and work schedules, airlines start to drop their prices to keep those planes full. With summer vacations wrapping up and the frenzy of holiday travel still a couple of months away, there's a lull in ticket purchases. To fill those empty seats, airlines slash prices. It’s your chance to snag a great deal on flights, but act fast—this window of opportunity closes as quickly as it opens. Once the holiday season gets closer, prices start to climb, peaking around Thanksgiving.

According to CheapOair, domestic and international airfares are already on the downswing. Since June 1, the average price for a domestic U.S. flight has dropped by 33.4 percent. International fares have also seen a decline, down 10 percent over the same period. Canadian domestic fares have fallen by 22 percent, and international fares by 19 percent. Even better, current trends suggest this downward slide will continue through August and September, with U.S. domestic fares potentially plummeting by 30 percent and international fares by 10 percent compared to the same time last year.

“Summer is winding down and consumer focus is on returning to normal work and school schedules. Our data shows that airfares are trending downward, and we expect that to continue for the immediate future. By sharing this information, CheapOair reminds us that it’s really the perfect time to get a jump on holiday travel plans,” said Glenn Cusano, President of Fareportal, the corporation behind OTA brands CheapOair and OneTravel.

Armed with this info, you can start planning for your next holiday getaway or a spontaneous, end-of-summer escape with an exceptional deal on airfare.
