Macy’s is pressing ahead with its plan to close 150 underperforming stores by 2026, with 66 locations already named as of January. Several locations have already closed, while others are set to close in the next month.
One of the most notable closures happened recently in downtown Brooklyn. The store, a staple on Fulton Street for nearly 30 years, originally housed the historic Abraham & Straus department store before Macy’s took over in 1995. Meanwhile, another iconic location at Sunrise Mall on Long Island is set to close next month.
The retailer is balancing these shutdowns with investment in its 350 remaining locations, aiming to strengthen its overall footprint. Clearance sales at closing stores began in January, running for 8-12 weeks, but Macy’s has not shared a full timeline for additional closures.
Why Macy's is shutting stores?
The company says the closures are part of its "Bold New Chapter" strategy to drive sustainable, profitable growth. Like many retail chains, Macy's has been struggling with declining sales attributed to online retail options and declining foot traffic in malls.
