As retail continues to feel the pinch of declining sales, Kohl's has announced that it is closing dozens of stores across the country in 2025. In a Jan. 9 press release, the Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin-based chain confirmed that employees at the affected stores have already been informed and offered either a competitive severance package or opportunities to transfer to other open positions within the company.

The retailer announced it will close 27 underperforming stores across more than a dozen states by April 2025, aiming to boost profitability amid declining sales.

Kohl’s will also shutter its e-commerce fulfillment center in San Bernardino, California, in May 2025. The facility, which has been open since 2010, will no longer be needed as Kohl's now fulfills customer orders directly from store locations.

Why is Kohl’s closing stores in 2025?

The announcement follows news in November 2024 that Kohl’s expects its full-year sales to drop 7% to 8%. The retailer, which currently operates over 1,120 stores, will release its 2024 financial results in February. Kohl’s says these changes are part of a larger transformation effort to streamline operations and stay competitive.
