After nearly a decade of struggling sales and mounting debt, the beloved fabric and craft store Joann is set to close more than half of its locations across the U.S.
Why is Joann’s closing U.S. stores?
The retailer, known for its wide selection of fabrics, sewing supplies and seasonal décor, has been hit hard by shifting consumer habits, increasing competition and declining interest in at-home crafts. Joann first filed for bankruptcy in March 2024, securing $132 million in financing to help tackle its massive $1 billion debt. But that wasn’t enough to keep the chain afloat. Just months later, the company found itself back in bankruptcy court, seeking approval to close around 500 of its 850 stores.
Which Joann stores are closing?
From New York to Alaska, customers will soon see "Going Out of Business" signs at their local Joann stores. Exact dates of store closings have not been revealed, but Joann has shared a list of all the stores that will be closing. Stores in every U.S. state except Hawaii are expected to shut their doors. Some of the hardest-hit states include California, New York, Michigan, Florida and Indiana.
“This was a very difficult decision to make, given the major impact we know it will have on our Team Members, our customers and all of the communities we serve,” a spokesperson for Joann said in a statement. "A careful analysis of store performance and future strategic fit for the Company determined which stores should remain operating as usual at this time."
For craft lovers who have long relied on Joann for fabrics and DIY essentials, this comes as a real blow, but it is not surprising given the current retail landscape as many stores, including Macy's, Party City, Big Lots, Kohl's, and others, have announced closures.
