Preparing to set out on the great American road trip? Picking a car is the first, and most important, step. The latest study, conducted by Upgraded Points, compares electric and gas cars in order to determine which is the most economical to take on a road trip. During the study, they examined both the time and the fuel costs along popular roads like Route 66 and California 1.
So, what did they discover? For every 100 miles driven along popular routes in America, an EV driver will save on average $11, but add 25 minutes to their route. The study tracked five iconic routes and found that electric vehicles increased travel time, ranging from less than two hours, to up to a whopping 13 hours.
Access to EV charging stations differs from state to state, with Washington D.C. clocking in at the top, with four (road) miles per EV charging port. California, Hawaii, and Massachusetts also scored high points for having an abundance of charging ports.
What it really boils down to is: would you rather save time or money? Sometimes, especially on a road trip, the pleasure lies in wandering off the beaten path…or in this case, road.
