It's the year of the weird and it keeps on going: the staff at the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans set up an actual gift registry for the pregnant and endangered western lowland gorilla who calls the zoo home, Tumani.
Tumani is 13 years old and is expecting her first baby gorilla, the first one to be born at the zoo in 24 years. She bred with a 27-year-old silverback gorilla, Okpara, who is also a resident of the zoo.
Although, according to an official press release, Tumani's "birth window" was between July 15 and August 20, she has yet to give birth, which means you still have time to buy her a nice little baby gift.
We should note that the registry doesn't only include treats for Tumani and her baby. The zoo is hoping to raise some funds to help the other animals as well.
"Audubon spends more than $70,000 a month to feed more than 15,000 animals in our care," said Vice President and Managing Director of Audubon Zoo Steve Marshall in an official statement. "Caring for our animals is a top priority for Audubon. Your support will provide nutritious diets and premium veterinary care to our animals like Tumani to ensure they are as healthy and happy as possible.”
You can find the full registry right here, but we thought we should highlight some of the most interesting items currently featured on it:
- A giant swing
- A giant slow feeder bag
- A game of Holey Moley
- A Looky Lou gravity feeder
You can actually visit Tumani and her animal friends at the zoo in person as long as you buy tickets in advance. Given social distancing guidelines, the zoo is capping the number of people allowed in daily, so make sure to grab a ticket as soon as you can.
