If you're panicking about a possible apocalypse and you've got a million dollars saved up, you might want to consider investing in the Survival Condo. A former Atlas Missile silo in the middle of rural Kansas, this 200-feet-underground bunker has been turned into a luxury condominium complex with a price tag to match.
The exact location of the hiding place is secret but here is what we know so far: originally built during the Cold War, the bunker has been retrofitted with nine-foot-thick reinforced concrete walls that protect a pet park, a swimming pool with water slide, a climbing wall, a food store, mechanical rooms, medical facilities, a gym, a sauna, a library, a cinema and a bar.
Seven entire floors are dedicated to residential condos which, according to CNET, "feel like units in a new apartment complex in San Francisco or Manhattan." That is: expect beautiful furniture, automated bidets, stainless steel appliances and Wolf cooktops to pepper each home.
The price of safety? A million dollars plus a monthly payment of $2,500 to cover water, Internet, electricity and the remaining roster of amenities that will be at your disposal while hiding underground.
But, believe it or not, this might soon no longer be the priciest bunker in the world. Larry Hall, the owner of the Survival Condo, is currently turning a second missile silo into a gigantic, luxurious underground cave. Just down the road from his current effort, Hall's new project will likely cost would-be buyers between $50 and $60 million per unit, according to CNET. Don't get your hopes up, though: there already is a waiting list of people interested.
