Mere mortals just don't do it for Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps anymore.
The now-retired athlete will race a great white shark in a special Discovery Channel program during July's "Shark Week." Excited? So are we.
"They are one of the fastest and most efficient predators on the planet: Sharks. He is our greatest champion to ever get in the water: Michael Phelps. 39 world records. 23 Olympic golds," reads an official press release about the event. "But he has one competition left to win. An event so monumental no one has ever attempted it before. The world’s most decorated athlete takes on the ocean’s most efficient predator: Phelps V Shark—the race is on!"
Less than a week ago, the soon-to-be-32-year-old posted a picture of a shark on Instagram, possibly previewing the grand competition to come. The caption reads: "I was able to do something that I had always wanted to do. Be in a cage and dive with great white sharks!" That is some wish, Phelps.
The program will air on Sunday, July 23. Will you be watching?
