Parts of the northern United States were hit with the first snow of the season yesterday and, predictably, Americans had to deal with commuting problems this morning following the freezing rain, snow and cold temperatures.

But things are about to get worse. Reminding us of the Polar Vortex that hit the country back in January of 2014, weather experts are warning the northern half of the country to brace itself for even colder temperatures, even more snow and, of course, even messier commutes this upcoming week.

Check out the graphic below for the current winter weather alerts issued across the country.

"The air mass on the way for the middle of December is likely to be substantially colder when compared to that of this past week and this weekend," AccuWeather meteorologist Paul Pastelok said last week.

According to ABC News, "temperatures 15 to 30 degrees below average will follow the cold rain and snow in the coming days through much of the Midwest and East."

Given today's cancelled flights and already frigid temperatures, we only have one piece of advice: stay warm, America (and be careful, of course)!
