You might want to make sure you’ll be near one of America’s best beaches this weekend, because a massive heat wave is headed our way and it won’t be pretty. Expect temperatures of up to 115 degrees in the central U.S., with the heat spiking in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic regions. Besides relocating to the Arctic, Joe Alton, M.D., a disaster preparedness expert and author, gives us a few more tips on how to survive the scorching temperatures:

-Stay indoors as much as possible. This might be the time to work through your Netflix queue.

-Avoid strenuous activity. For once, a doctor is telling you to not exercise.

-Remember that feeling thirsty is a sign of dehydration (always drink before you’re thirsty) and make sure to have at least half a gallon of water per day if staying indoors (1 to 2 additional liters for every hour you spend outdoors). One more thing: you might want to avoid caffeine and alcohol.

-If you are hanging out outside, wear lightweight and light-colored clothes that don’t attract sun. Wearing a hat and carrying an umbrella might be good ideas as well.

-Avoid grandiosely filling meals and opt for more frequent, but lighter, snacks.
